Introduction

The range of functions, roles, activities, and responsibilities of a nursing professional is authorized to perform has been defined as the scope of nursing practice.  In a broad sense, the nursing practice includes all the activities and roles that are carried out by a registered nurse with a view to addressing the human responses and experiences related to illness and health. Health Protection, Health Maintenance, Health Promotion, Health Restoration, Palliation, and Rehabilitation are included in this aspect.

The Nursing Profession is regarded as one of the highly noblest professions as compared to any other field to work if someone has an interest to help people and pursue the same profession.  Medicine is one of the important industries which are engaged in providing excellent career opportunities for the health care professionals for nurses as well as doctors and other health workers.

Previously, there were lesser opportunities for nursing professionals due to the primary focus on hospitals and not on their requirements. Due to ample reasons, career options and the scope of nursing careers are more diverse these days. Some of the scopes of a nursing career have been discussed below;

Staff Nurses:

These Nurses are directly associated with providing patient care ranging from single to multiple patients. The staff nurse will directly report to the ward supervisor.

Nursing Supervisor:

A Nursing Supervisor is a nurse appointed in in-charge of the nursing care ward or unit and reports to the Superintendent of Nursing.

Assistant Nursing Superintendent:

An Assistant Nursing Superintendent is a nurse who has to report to the Nursing Superintendent and also to the Deputy Nursing Superintendent with the management of Nursing Care of wards. For example, a nurse appointed in a surgical department as an Assistant Nursing Superintendent.

Community Health Nurse:

Community Health Nurse mainly focuses on hygiene, health awareness, and reproductive child health.

Industrial Nurse:

Industrial Nurses are the nurses who will be responsible for health education, illness care, and first-aid regarding accident prevention and industrial hazards.

Military Nurse:

Military Nurses are the nurses, who are appointed as a nurse to serve in the Indian Army. This means that Military Nurses can become commissioned officers with ranks ranging from lieutenant to major general.

Teaching in Nursing:

The functions and responsibilities of a teacher in nursing include teaching, supervising, planning, and providing learning exposures to the students. Some of the positions available in the nursing education sector include tutors, senior tutors, clinical instructors, professors, associate professors, lecturers, etc.

Deputy Nursing Superintendent:

A  Deputy Nursing Superintendent is appointed to assist with the nursing administration of the hospital and all the nurses in the specific wards will report to the Deputy Nursing Superintendent.

Nursing Superintendent:

The nursing Superintendent has to report to the medical superintendent and has to ensure efficient and safe management of the hospital with regard to nursing services.

Director of Nursing:

A  Director of Nursing is in-charge of patient care as well nursing education services in a teaching hospital.

Nursing service in administrative positions:

Administrative positions in nursing include Joint Director of Nursing, Deputy Director of Nursing at the Health Directorate in each state.  At the national level, the Nursing Advisor to the Government of India is considered the highest administrative position.

Nursing Service Abroad:

Promising opportunities and lucrative salary packages offered in foreign countries are one of the major reasons for a significant increase in the nursing profession in India.
